• For the record, I almost never f-lock anything. Exceptions: Pr0n; RPF (no, don't ask to be "added to the filter", there's only one and it's on [info]bsgrpf as well); and, well, nothing else at the moment. I have a few totally private posts like my bad poetry and song lyrics and notes about various things.

• The fingernail I slammed in an elevator door back in September has finally almost completely grown out.

• Thank you for your support.

• Some people should realize that claiming that they know something for a fact that they don't, in fact, know just makes them look really, really silly and makes me want to mock them more.

• The same people need to realize that either they are guilty of gross intellectual dishonesty or they severely need to improve their reading comprehension skills when they tell people things like, "Oh, but I'm the strange obsessed one because I post pics of him [Jamie Bamber] and news of his appearances and gush over his hotness and share my loopy dreams," the implication being, of course, that someone actually said that she was strange and obsessed with Jamie Bamber rather than that someone could get that impression from her LJ.

• And (I promise I'll stop soon), "It amazes me that people can make comments about a story they never even read." Dur. We read it, we ... just ... couldn't help ourselves.

• And (OK, really, I'll stop now), just remember:

On the Internet, no one knows you're a dog )

A public apology to whomever Suzanne banned from the Apollo/Starbuck Fanfic list.

Because it wasn't me. I don't know why she thought you were me, because you weren't.

But, the fact that she banned someone without verifying who they actually were says a lot more about her than about me. *sigh*

People are actually abandoning Battlestar Galactica because of some totally out-of-context spoilers that may or may not even be true?

This is sad. And dumb. Sad and dumb. (Kind of like Helo, but not as good-looking.)

I think the Universe just rolled its eyes.

Ah, fandom.

After last night's spoilerific broadcast of Subject2Discussion, Ron Moore has gone on the SciFi boards and made a fairly reasonable plea for people to stop posting spoilers. Wank ensues. :-)

And, to a certain extent, I think Ron's right. Consider what's already happening as a result of the very sketchy information that KoenigRules revealed last night: There's a lot of people all up in arms and screaming about how shitty the ideas are when the truth of the matter is we have absolutely no context within which to evaluate them. If people were like, "Hmmmm, I wonder how that's going to play out?" rather than, "if this garbage is true, I'm going to have to find something else to watch on Friday nights" (which is an exact quote from Someone), then I don't think it would be such a problem. But I've been giving this a lot of thought, and I'd rather that the spoilers dried up, much as I love being spoiled, than that we spend the next six months engaged in attacks on RDM and the writers because of someone's (mis)interpretation based on very sketchy information.

That said...

The problem ain't the spoilers. It's the wank. And that's caused by people with no brains reading spoilers.

And one final note: I fear very much that the main victim of this whole brouhaha will be Shaun Daily and Subject2Discussion. I suspect that he will find it next to impossible to get any BSG guests in the future, and that's a damn shame.

Or the Apollo/Starbuck Fan Fiction group on Yahoo!, anyway.

This is gonna be long )

(Short version, for the easily bored: They dissed Katee Sackhoff. I responded. I have been banned. I am evil.)

Someone on my flist - all right, it was [info]whatimages - pointed out a lengthy post + commentary by [info]nancy777ca that turned into a pretty good wankfest. The wank eventually settled on being about criticism (constructive vs. destructive) and whether or not Danielle Steele is a writer on a par with Jane Austen*, but it actually started out being about a couple of subjects near and dear to my own heart, namely, RPF and the concept of canon in fan fiction. I thought about responding on [info]nancy777ca's journal but decided I'd rather do it here. Start my own wank, as it were. However, I'm doing a fair amount of quoting from this post and some of the comments thereto.

Also, disclaimer: The word "you" in the following is used in the rhetorical sense and does not specifically refer to [info]nancy777ca; that is to say, I am not addressing her, although I am addressing some of her comments.

So, I just read this* interesting book about the Halifax explosion.

Say what? you say.

Back in December, 1917, a munitions ship named the Mont Blanc collided with another ship called the Imo in Halifax Harbor and caught fire. Shortly thereafter, it exploded, with the force of about 3 kilotons of TNT. Needless to say, this did not do the city of Halifax a whole lot of good. A pretty sizeable chunk of it was, in fact, levelled.

Much of the book is about the relief efforts that followed the explosion. It's fascinating to read how well-organized and efficient the response was, considering that almost 90 years later, we responded so much more badly to a fucking hurricane that we knew was coming.

Er, sorry. I'm still a little pissed off at the Bush Administration.

I mentioned at one point that I might write something about these apparently disparate subjects.

Here it is. )
