The final day and even MORE excruciating details than you ever asked for! I do suggest checking out [info]eugis's reports for MUCH better pictures and even a couple of videos! I bet if you put together her photos and my great big wall o' text, it would be perfect.

This is Peanut and she needs a macro after yesterday's ordeal-- we were at the emergency vet till midnight with apparent chocolate poisoning... I just want everybody to be especially careful-- don't turn your backs on your cats if you're baking Xmas cookies that have chocolate in them!!!

EDIT: I probably should say that she managed to come out of it all right, thank goodness!

A post is made with a video of Portia De Rossi on The View. Elisabeth Hasselbeck asks about whether or not "the word [marriage] is more important than the rights". Portia "explained that a 'lesser' term would imply that gay couples are lesser".

The comments are mostly unsurprising for ONTD. However, [info]hoodiefan says that Hasselbeck has a point and predictably starts up a little shitstorm. The real stupid is this comment though:

"It just seems like a huge waste of time and resources for gay activists to be focused on getting to use ~a word~ when there are actual human rights issues at stake, like the fact transgendered people often times can’t even find work, have medical coverage ETC but lets focus on the word so portia and ellen and other rich gays can have bridal registries, etc etc"

Consensus is not stupid. Sorry.

TCM and I are likethis this chilly weekend. Lots of stuff I haven't seen before, yay.

- Last night, Shop Around the Corner, <3 Jimmy Stewart.
- This afternoon, Random Harvest, kind of soppy but ultimately satisfying.
- And now (well, just finished), The Talk of the Town, which is right on the edge of going OT3 for real.

I'll probably try to see an in-theatres movie tomorrow since I'm way behind on those.

At the beginning of the day...

DSCN9028

...and then 10 HOURS LATER...

DSCN9029

(Yes, I totally took a picture of my carrel before and after 10 hours of inhabiting it. I had a feeling it was going to be an epic day. AND IT WAS.)

Items you can spot in picture #2 include (but are not limited to): my alpaca/silk Rose's Wristwarmers, DRD Pike doing a faceplant into my notes, the remains of lunch (and snack), a truly amazing amount of post-it flags (mostly hidden, actually, but you can see a few), antibacterial hand sanitizer (because hello, it's the LIBRARY DURING FINALS), and probably the best coffee mug I didn't have to pay for (yay for swag).

Not pictured: my shoes (which were most definitely not on my feet for most of the day) and my two layers of polar fleece (which I didn't need because our corner of the library was quite warm).

--

Sadly, none of my pictures of yesterday's snow came out very impressively, so I have nothing to share on that front. But it did snow, and that's that.

Thanks, friends, for the good vibes the other day! Just one of those times when everything hits at once, though it turned out not to be a bad day at all. In fact, I got high ratings on my evaluation. A wee bit of holiday malaise, as usual, but overall things are much better now!

Tonight is my annual viewing of one of my all-time favorite movies, The Sound of Music. Whee! LOVE IT. Every single thing about it. Well, except for Liesl/Rolf, who are rather annoying. And I'll repeat what I say every time I post about it: The Baroness is not evil. She's just misunderstood. Hmph.

I recently finished reading The Knife of Never Letting Go, by Patrick Ness, which was highly recommended by [info]taragel. I quite liked it, though not as much as I'd hoped, and it led me to some curious thoughts on American vs. British "styles" of writing. A few thoughts, with minimal spoilers. )

Another book rec: The Know-It-All: One Man's Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World, by A.J. Jacobs. My sister loaned it to me over the summer, and I really loved it. So, you want to read the encyclopedia? )

Although I don't have much to say about it, this week's episode of Friday Night Lights was stunning, of course. [No real spoilers here.] But I'm a bit confused by all the consternation in various blogs about how Coach calls Landry "Lance". I could've sworn that in S1 we learn that Lance is his first name, but everyone calls him Landry. Am I mistaken?

And I'll wrap up with a short linkspam:
-- Indi pointed me toward a fun quiz: What is your decorating style? Mine was 50% Nantucket, 25% Zen, and 25% Vintage Modern.
-- Poniewozik posted an interesting take on the HIMYM "Dirty Frosty" video that has gone viral.
-- Hitfix put The Amazing Race on the top 30 of the decade, and his description is a good explanation of why I also love it.
-- The NYT has a blog post on the new (and annoying) trend of when party hosts expect guests to pay their share.
-- Mental Floss unveils the underground CAPTCHA industry.
-- Sign On San Diego has a great piece on attracting boys to ballet.
-- Jezebel hopes that Gabourey Sidibe can have a long career in Hollywood, but they're worried she might not get many good roles.
-- And they have a fun post (with several cute cat videos) discussing just what cats do all day.

It's been awhile since I posted. I've been very very busy.

So - I'll start with praising all the amazing Fanfic! OMG! Hours and hours worth of fabulous BSG, Kara/Sam Big Bang fanfic has been coming out over the last week. I'd like to throw my recs in for:

[info]merrykk - Waltzing with Destiny

[info]karate0kat - Through the Looking Glass

[info]lizardbeth_j - The Thread of Ariadne

[info]grey_sw - Voice of Reason

[info]lyssie - Untitled

Between all of these I'm going to be spending most of my December reading! Yay!

****

I also have a movie recommendation.

GO SEE THE BLIND SIDE (I think I cried almost the entire movie. It was that kind of good.)

I also enjoyed 2012 very much. I know it's cheesy as hell, and makes no sense. And I mean that literally. It makes no sense. So I didn't try to make sense of it, and just allowed myself to enjoy the destructo-porn. Heheheheh.

Over in [info]equestrian a rather cool video is posted (cool for those who like horses, at least) about a horse doing at liberty work (read: not tied to anything or anyone) and going over an obstacle course very similar to what one might find at a dog agility competition.

Most of the comments are along the lines of "Wow cool!" until [info]wagrobanite enters the scene and decides that the video is "not really like canine agility" at all and refuses to see the similarities insisting that because she has competed in the sport for years she is TEH EXPERT in all things agility. And proceeds to split hairs, refusing apparently, to recognize that horses would be incapable of performing on a dog agility course.

[info]hydrogen_atom tries to be helpful by providing a definition of agility from an agility association website but [info]wagrobanite insists that there's more to agility than just that.

As added lulz, [info]silverblaidd utterly misses [info]harnessphoto's sarcasm

I was just browsing random twitter accounts, as you do, and a girl that I once hated posted the link to this under "is it just me or is the new Iron Man poster a little homoerotic?"

I have to admit, I was a little disappointed. But still: I need this movie to come out last night. Especially if Shia LaBeouf has decided he's too good for the Y the Last Man adaptation. God, kid, could you make more stupid decisions if you tried?

Right now I have three bandom stories that I am in ~love with on the go, and the only hard part is deciding which one to work on tonight. With my tea and my crap dollar store chocolates. Also, last night I wrote 4000 words of original fiction in 3 hours after I came inside from the blizzard aka snowpocalypse that sent the entire city into a hissy tither. Yep. That is all.

Title: The Fine Art of Bartering
Author: [info]kappamaki33
Characters: Ensemble, featuring Lee, Gaeta, Kara, Dee, Skulls, Racetrack, Crashdown, and Boomer
Rating: Maybe PG-13 for language and innuendo?
Summary: Bridge bunnies, Viper jocks, and Raptor wranglers form a delicate alliance to achieve a vital common goal. Kinda crackish.
Notes: You know how there are certain things that, realistically, the Fleet should have run out of after a couple of months, and yet five years later, they still have them? This is semi-serious crack about how that worked. Set early first season, somewhere around "Water."

"Not that kind of proposition, Ensign," he said, displaying his mastery of the bridge bunny skill of inflecting ranks so they sounded like another word for "dumbass."

The saddest thing about my computer crash last year? I lost all my Christmas icons. Dammit, I love those cheesy little hats. :(

But! While I'm on a bit of an LJ break at the moment, I'm making a quick exception. If you would like a Christmas card from me, please comment with your address. Comments are screened. See you on the other side. ;)

Watching Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight a really awful Saturday morning, US knockoff of a long-running Japanese series (think Power Rangers-clone) with kidlet. However, the show was somewhat redeemed by watching Mark Dacascos kick some whiny boy "hero" ass.

Off to a birthday party. *sigh*
